Supportive Spaces for Sensitive Souls

Interior design has a HUGE impact on your daily life as an empath.

And I’m not just talking about spendy/trendy/fancy design. You don’t have to have a magazine-worthy house to feel good in your home! There are a few simple things you can do with your living space that will actually help you preserve your energy, process your emotions, and return to center.

If your energy (or maybe even your whole life) has been feeling stagnant, then take a peek at the tips below. A refresh of your space might be just what you need to replenish yourself!

You’re a sensitive soul.

Being out and about can wreak havoc on your nervous system, and your endless to-do list keeps you up past your bedtime. So, it’s no wonder that—if you come home to a cluttered or visually busy space—it makes you feel even MORE tired. Your living room, kitchen counter, bathroom, and bedroom become another set of tasks to tackle that you just don’t have time or energy for. Before you know it, the mess has piled up and you’ve reached for a big glass of wine. You’ll get to it… later.

The last thing you want to do is spend every weekend cleaning up… just to cycle back into chaos during the week, right? You deserve a break!

You want to spend your off time with your families, outside, getting creative, learning new skills, or hanging out with your friends. Or at the very least, napping. So what’s an overwhelmed empath to do?

First, take a cue from Marie Kondo and tidy up.

Great interior design isn’t just beautiful, it’s functional.

That means that everything has a place to go AND you only keep what’s essential, beautiful (to you), and useful. Take 15 minutes and go through ONE area of your house that tends to collect clutter.

Ask yourself the following questions to help you decide what to keep, what to toss, and what to donate.
  • Do I use this regularly?
  • Is it simple and easy to use?
  • Is it in good condition?
  • Do I have any emotional baggage/heaviness/guilt around this item?
  • Do I love looking at it?
  • If not, where can I put it so it’s out of sight (but easy to access)?

SUSTAINABILITY TIP: Keep in mind that there isn’t really any “away” you can throw things to. Much of what gets donated ends up in landfills over time. Keep this in mind as you’re considering what to keep… It may be best to repair rather than replace.

When something is truly worn out, consider replacing it with an item that’s well-made or even sustainably-sourced. It may cost you more up front, but the years of use + reduced ecological impact make it worth it for you AND for the planet.

Pass along things that…
  • You’re waiting for the “perfect” time to use (or when you’ve lost x pounds)
  • Have a ton of guilt/should energy in them or you’re only keeping because it was a gift

Next up… get color savvy

Interior designers make spaces that feel so “put together” because they are color experts. But you don’t need a design degree to learn how to use color well! Nor do you have to listen to psychological or even art school ideas of which colors to use. This is all about your intuition, love!

Choose colors that help you feel the way you want to feel in your space. Does gold make you feel happy? Might be a great color to use in your kitchen, where you want to start your day off with a little joy. Does aqua make you feel dreamy? Incorporate it in your bedroom for more restful sleep.

And… being highly sensitive, too much color can sometimes be too much of a good thing.

Leave a lot of white space. It offers you visual “breathing room” and gives your eyes (and your brain) a place to rest.

I love to choose 3-5 main colors (in addition to black/white) that I incorporate throughout my home.

This helps me feel a sense of continuity as I move from room to room, soothing my spirit and creating less jarring transitions as I go throughout my day… This is particularly important since I work from home: I need to maintain my focus as I shift from being in the office, to eating lunch, to taking breaks to nap or journal.

My current faves (which you also see in my online branding) are blush, coral, mustard, emerald, and aqua. They all help me feel happy AND relaxed – essential to #momlife and #bosslife.

Finally, it’s all about texture.

As an empath, you’re particularly sensitive to how things feel—not just emotionally, but physically. Texture can help you create a space that not only looks inviting, but FEELS amazing. I love to weave in lots of fabric-as-art and soft, furry things that are cozy to snuggle into. Note that—just like with color—you want to err on the side of keeping the number of different textures/patterns to a minimum, otherwise you’ll tip into visual (and therefore physical) overwhelm.

Opposites tend to attract—rough with smooth, furry with plastic/glass, shiny with satin, velvet with wood, etc. For example, you might want to pair a synthetic sheepskin with a smooth clear plexiglass chair. (That’s exactly what I’m sitting on right now as I type this article!)

In this photo, the sleek/shiny coffee table is paired with furry sheepskins. The wood vases are paired with the white cotton pillow fabric. Even the leafy floral arrangement is set into a modern vase.

You don’t have to go hog wild, toss everything out, or spend a bunch.

In fact, one of my favorite low-cost (or even NO-cost) ways to refresh a space is to:

1) Empty it out and clean it thoroughly
2) Put back only the things that I love
3) Rearrange the furniture or put things together in a slightly different way

VOILA! 

The entire space feels new again and I’m re-energized to spend time in there. This works REALLY well for rooms that quickly feel “tired”—like home offices and living rooms.
